The Story Studio: Malaria pairs talented journalists and storytellers with the experts, access and mentorship they need to produce ambitious, evidence-based malaria stories that center the people behind the data — the researchers, health workers, families and communities living with malaria every day.
The program aims to elevate voices from malaria affected countries while ensuring stories stand out across multiple platforms and markets, with a particular focus on increasing malaria coverage in U.S. and international media.

I'm a Fellow, Where Can I Find More Details About the Program?

How Can I Apply to The Story Studio: Malaria?
Unfortunately, applications for 2026 have closed but please check back for updates in 2027.
Is the Fellowship Available Outside of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda?
The 2026 fellowship is focused on these three countries. We hope to expand to other malaria endemic countries in the future.
How Long Is the Fellowship?
The fellowship runs for 16 weeks, which includes onboarding, in-person training, regular live sessions, and 1:1 mentorship from experienced journalists and editors throughout the story development process — from pitching ideas, through field reporting and editing, to publication and showcase.
Where Can I Find the Fellowship Schedule?
The 16-week fellowship will include a 3-day in-person training at Aga Khan University in Nairobi, Kenya in addition to weekly virtual sessions alongside independent reporting and mentorship. A detailed schedule will be provided with the fellowship onboarding materials.
Do I Need to Have My Own Equipment?
No! If you don't have equipment, we can provide what you need for the fellowship.
Is Travel Required For the Fellowship? Will My Expenses Be Covered?
Travel is required for the 3-day in-person training that will take place in Nairobi, Kenya. Additional travel may be necessary for story-gathering purposes. Each fellow will receive a reporting grant to cover essential fellowship expenses.
